Imipramine hydrochloride, also known as 5-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]-10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenz[b,f]azepine monohydrochloride (Tofranil), is a tricyclic antidepressant (TCAs) that belongs to the same family as the antipsychotic phenothiazines. It is a white solid and is primarily known for its role as a serotonin uptake inhibitor. Imipramine hydrochloride has a high 5-HT-to-NE uptake block ratio, making it a potent serotonin transport inhibitor (SERTI). It also inhibits the serotonin and norepinephrine transporters, with little effect on the dopamine transporter. The compound exhibits anticholinergic and sedative effects due to its dimethylamino nature.
